UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. And we never give up.  One of the key implementation tools to achieve the desired objectives is worldwide communication and advocacy.  The Division of Communication leads the communication and advocacy strategy within the Organization and is comprised of 150 staff and consultants.

Overall Goals :

2018 was a year for rapid growth and expansion for DOC, bringing several new key posts and a new leadership team.   2019 will be a year to work on consolidating and integrating our new team, working with each of its members to ensure DOC is best placed to deliver its goals, as elaborated below :

  • Empowering and motivating teams to deliver work that is creative, effective, and clearly contributes to DOC objectives and UNICEF’s objectives across the world ;
  • DOC staff see themselves as important components of an overall DOC plan and teams work collaboratively across the division, actively identifying and capitalizing on synergies and opportunities to support each other towards common goals ;
  • Staff are highly driven and motivated and feel that they are having an impact ;
  • DOC provides a work environment that is sustainable, respectful and highly productive ;
  • Performance is managed on a continuous basis with permanent constructive feedback that aims to encourage learning and growth ;
  • DOC becomes more than the sum of individual staff skills because planning, implementing and monitoring are pursued in a complementary and synergetic manner. (Note: The upcoming Global communication and advocacy strategic framework – GCASF 2.0 may serve as a framing tool.) ;
  • Passion is part of DOC’s work-culture because the personal purpose of its team members and those of employer are identified and aligned ;
  • A practical follow-up plan results in the sustainable creation of a division that inspires the rest of the organization, starting with ‘champions’ that ‘infiltrate’ existing group dynamics.

Desired Outcomes for the Retreat : In order to move DOC further towards its overall goals, the Division would like to hold an all DOC staff retreat over one or two days from 30 April – 1 May devoted to vision/purpose and team building, with the desired outcomes as follows :

  • A greater understanding by all DOC staff of our vision/purpose as well as how we work as a division to build on this vision ;
  • Gaining greater clarity on expectations and how to deliver on these ;
  • Agreement on criteria for work prioritization ;
  • A move towards encouraging an environment of genuine respect, caring and mutual support ;
  • Promoting creativity and experimentation by exposing staff to new ideas, novel approaches and novel concepts ;
  • Increase in transparency and trust ;
  • Gaining new skills to reduce stress, increase emotional intelligence and active listening ;
  • Passion, complementarity and inspiration are part of DOC’s working culture ;
  • Creating an atmosphere of fun!

Major Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Work with the retreat planning committee to design and develop an agenda, activities and exercises leading to the desired outcomes ;
  • Note :  The Division has already done a detailed needs analysis which will be shared with the facilitator ;
  • Come up with specific measurable success indicators for each of the desired outcomes ;
  • Do a base line and after the retreat survey evaluation based on the success indicators ;
  • Facilitate the retreat, including all plenary sessions and break-out activities ;
  • Write a final report that includes any key action points and results of the retreat, including recommendations on how to build on observed team strengths and address observed weaknesses ;
  • Design a practical follow-up plan including the use of ‘champions’ that ‘infiltrate’ existing group dynamics.

Expected results :

  • A well planned and smoothly executed team-building retreat, with the interventions specifically designed to meet the overall objectives and desired outcomes ;
  • A report on the retreat (see para above) which includes an evaluation and follow-up plan.
  1. Start date : 1 April 2019 ;
  2. End date : 5 May 2010 ;
  3. Timeframe/Deliverables :   Within the time frame of 1 April to 5 May, deliver the following.
