About the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)

For nearly 10 years, AGRA’s work across 18 countries was focused on distinct problems related to seed production, soil health, and agriculture markets that were so profound and had been neglected for so long that they required a concentrated effort to resolve. Their results have been impressive. Now, they’re embarking on an ambitious and more integrated approach in select countries.



To catalyze and sustain inclusive agriculture transformation in Africa by increasing incomes and improving food security for 30 million smallholder households in Africa and to support countries on a pathway to attain and sustain an agriculture transformation



AGRA is an alliance led by Africans with roots in farming communities across the continent. They understand that African farmers need uniquely African solutions designed to meet their specific environmental and agricultural needs, so they can sustainably boost production and gain access to rapidly growing agriculture markets.


Head of Grants

The Head of Grants will be responsible for developing, implementing, operationalizing and optimizing AGRA’s grants management strategy, policies and procedures.

Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) ( has retained SRI Executive Search ( ) to assist with their search for an exceptional candidate to fill the position of Head of Grants.

This is a full-time position and the successful candidate will initially be engaged on a three-year basis, with the possibility of renewal. Successful candidates will be based in Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel, approximately 40% per month/year.



The role of Head of Grants is critical for the success of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Reporting directly to the Chief Finance and Operations Officer the Head of Grants will guide Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) strategic and operational engagement.



The Head of Grants will be responsible for developing, implementing, operationalizing and optimizing AGRA’s grants management strategy, policies and procedures. S/he will direct all components of grants processing, including structure of grants, regulatory compliance, and sharing of grants information with program, finance and communications and technology staff.  S/he will lead grants monitoring and evaluation processes, and train staff in compliance, internal processes and technology for efficient use of resources. The Head, Grants will have overall responsibility for designing and implementing AGRA’s grants administration systems and ensure that AGRA’s grant making is effective and efficient.

The performance of this role holder will be assessed based on the achievements made on :

  • Efficient and effective management of AGRA’s grant portfolio ;
  • Compliance with grant making strategy, processes, policies and procedures ;
  • Alignment of function to AGRA’s business requirement ;
  • Effectiveness and efficiency of Grant Processing committees ;
  • Achievement of desired turnaround times ;
  • Efficient functioning and up to date of the Grant Management Information system.

Technical Competencies for the position : Demonstrate knowledge of all own work role specific issues. This encompasses the technical skills or knowledge required to perform the essential duties as described in this Job Description. Specific technical competencies: quantitative analytical skills including use of appropriate software, results-based management systems, designing tools and strategies for data collection, analysis and production of reports; In-depth knowledge on MIS, M&E and development issue.

Accuracy and attention to detail : High level of accuracy, attention to detail and thoroughness. Ability to maintain a timely and efficient work flow.

Managing Resources : Demonstrates the ability to plan and use resources (people and/or finance and/or physical assets) in accordance with AGRA guidelines and delegated accountability so that objectives are achieved in the most effective manner possible.

Coaching and Developing Staff :  A demonstrated capacity for working effectively within multi-disciplinary teams for collective success and provide effective coaching and encourage appropriate development activities in order to support staff in identifying and meeting their training and development needs

Communication and Interpersonal relations : Exceptional communication skills and ability to represent AGRA externally at high levels. Demonstrates ability to maintain lasting, healthy, and effective one-to-one working relationships with colleagues, suppliers, customers, professional peers, etc.

Intercultural Sensitivity and Effectiveness : Demonstrates ability to cross and bridge different racial, cultural, or business cultures. This requires and is exhibited by personal experience of international or cross-cultural business with improved achievements.

Team Work : Demonstrates productive drive in working with peers, partners, consultants and others to achieve pre-targeted and measurable business results


Required Experience and Qualifications :

Academic and Professional Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, International Development, Finance, Public Administration or any related discipline, from a reputable institution ;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, accounting, or any other related area ;
  • Good working knowledge of not-for-profit and private foundation law and US funding regulations ;
  • Computer proficiency in: Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet search skills, PowerPoint, and ability to learn new applications quickly ;
  • Knowledge of GIFTS a plus ;
  • Working knowledge of not-for-profit and private foundation law and accounting regulations ;
  • Understanding of current IRS regulations as they pertain to public charities.

Relevant Experience :

  • At least 12 years of experience in Financial management and accounting ;
  • 5 years of experience at senior management level in grants management in a multi donor, multi program International NGO ;
  • Deep knowledge of agricultural development in Africa ;
  • Experience managing multinational initiatives in the private and/or public sector ;
  • Solid understanding of agricultural markets, commodities and higher value products ;
  • Proven ability to lead effective and high impact teams and partnerships ;
  • Sound knowledge of, and experience in agricultural trade development at national, regional and/or international levels ;
  • Experience in working with key stakeholders to reform national and regional policies and institutions ;
  • Technical knowledge of drivers that influence smallholder market linkage ;
  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects of the African financial systems ;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a complex or pioneering environment and in managing, and creating opportunities for change ;
  • Strong relationship management experience with the ability to effectively engage with a diverse range of stakeholders at the highest levels ;
  • Experience in formulating, developing and implementing new strategies.

Terms of Appointment

This is a full-time position with the successful candidate being contracted on a three-year basis with the possibility of renewal.    Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  A pension plan, life and medical insurances are included in the benefits package.
