Overall Purpose of the Role :

To promote DRC’s mission, mandate, work and advocacy strategies within the region, while working closely with Regional and Country teams to identify appropriate methods to communicate to relevant parties.   The Communications Officer will produce and disseminate internal and external publications, communication products and other practical tasks.

Responsibilities :

Communication products :

Assist in planning, developing and implementing DRC regional communication and visibility activities, this includes; updating websites, researching and writing articles, developing success stories for use on DRC publications and communications platforms

Visibility products :

Provide support to the regional team and country operations in the development and production of visibility materials (e.g., leaflets, fact sheets, banners, newsletters, merchandise, thematic bulletins, photobooks, and other visibility materials) including liaising with designers, print houses, etc.

Graphic Design :

Provide support for graphic design of reports, publications, and other products for the region, including annual reports, strategies, etc.

Event planning :

Organize conferences and workshops by preparing and translating press releases, agendas, minutes of the meetings and ensuring media coverage.

Photography and Video :

Capture photos and videos at various events

Quality assurance of communications products  :

Quality assurance of products according to DRC’s brand manual in terms of layout, design and writing of various publications and visibility materials from the country offices, such as reports, educational material, banners, etc.

Field Visits :

Conduct field visits to collect both written and visual documentation of DRC’s work in the form of photography, videos, and slideshows as well as facilitate visits from journalists with the relevant field offices when necessary.

Other  :

Assist in administrative tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Reporting

The Communications Officer will report to the Regional Advocacy Coordinator

Conditions :

Contract :    One year contract (3 months probation period).
Other employment conditions in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National staff recruited by the Regional Office, East Africa & Great Lakes.
Availability : January 2019
Duty Station : Nairobi with frequency of travel to East Africa and Great Lakes office locations

General

Commitments : DRC has a Humanitarian Accountability Framework, outlining its global accountability committments. All staff are required to contribute to the achievement of this framework.

Experience and technical competencies :

Essential : 
  • A university degree in communications, journalism, or a similar or equivalent professional qualification ;
  • At least 2 years of experience in a similar role with INGO ;
  • Excellent oral and written skills and demonstrated ability to write and develop strong communication and advocacy materials ;
  • Expertise with layout and graphic design  ;
  • Experienced photographer and/or videographer ;
  • Proactive self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision ;
  • Flexible, enthusiastic and willingness to learn from others ;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines ;
  • Willingness to travel to field locations in insecure environments throughout East Africa and Great Lakes region.
Preferable : 
  • Fluent in spoken and written French ;
  • An understanding of humanitarian issues in East Africa and Great Lakes region.
