Organizational Setting :

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a technical knowledge-based organization marching forward with policy dialogues and advocating for the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all ; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations in the underdeveloped countries. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition at country level, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines :

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Bangladesh and direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) the incumbent will support the activities of the FAO Bangladesh Programme Unit. The duties and responsibilities will include, but not limited to the followings

Tasks and responsibilities :

  • Support the vision and strategic thinking of the FAO Bangladesh Country Programme Framework objectives and create the mapping with the UN Country Team Strategy for Bangladesh.
  • Participate in the planning, organization and implementation of various Technical Cooperation Programme and liaise with the government and relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist with organization of trainings, workshops and meetings (communicate with partners, ensure follow-ups and participate in the trainings as requested by the management.
  • In close collaboration with national institutions involved in the project activities, support meetings, consultations and workshops to share information and knowledge and build consensus.
  • Support the various sectorial coordination mechanisms, including working groups Dhaka level, actively participate in it and provided the secretariat service when required and assist in facilitating and ensuring appropriate mechanism of coordination and information sharing within the stakeholder.
  • Coordinate project development, work planning and adequate reporting for the country office against indicators as defined in the corporate system. (FPMIS /PIRES)
  • Monitor the triggers in the FAO systems and alert the respective project managers of the actions required well in advance in respect to the various projects implemented by the country office.
  • Report on the progress of the projects assigned at regular intervals and identify weaknesses that can be addressed;
  • Preparation of project briefs and the country office annual report in collaboration with other units and project of FAO Bangladesh.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Candidates will be assessed against the following :

 Minimum Requirements :
  • Master’s degree or higher in economics, agriculture economics, social science, natural resources management or related subject.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in working in liaison with government at various levels, the UN or international development organization in Bangladesh
  • Working knowledge of English and Bengali
  • National of Bangladesh

Technical/Functional Skills :

  • The candidate should have an extensive knowledge of agriculture and food systems in Bangladesh and project management/administration

  • Demonstrated competency in planning, monitoring and executing programme activities in complex situations
  • Ability to work under pressure in an independent manner within a programme team and to mentor the development of the people working with him/her
  • Excellent communication skills including strong writing skills, proven ability to convey complex ideas through clear communication, and concise reports, and effective oral presentations.
