Summary : The work schedule for this position is :

    • Full Time (48 hours per week)
    • Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (6 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Duties

Basic Function of the Position :

A- Operating  vehicle to transport Mission personnel and official visitors within the city of Bamako and surrounding areas and  up-country on field trips as directed, for official business only :

  • Keeping assigned vehicle in clean and serviceable condition ;
  • Performing first echelon maintenance on vehicle and promptly reporting  malfunction of the vehicle to the Dispatcher ;
  • Maintaining a daily trip log of all trips and stops and ensuring that the passenger complete his/her portion on the trip ticket after trip   is over ;
  • Maintaining good appearance, i.e. clean uniform with change of uniforms at least twice a week ;
  • Reporting any damage to a vehicle as a result of an accident or other causes to the Dispatcher regardless of the damage.

B- Serving as a special messenger when required, to deliver cargo, documents/letters or invitations to Mission offices, Local   Government and International Organizations offices.  May be assigned to drive USG official visitors during portions of their trip :

  • Performing the daily and weekly vehicle maintenance checks, and reports all problems to the garage, through the supervisor. -Ensuring vehicles are delivered for the monthly preventive maintenance check.

C- Cleaning vehicle exterior and interior :

  • Ensuring vehicles are fueled and ready for service at all times ;
  • Driving occasionally outside Bamako on field trips, which may be done day or for extended periods. During these periods, Driver is responsible for passengers’ safety and comfort. In addition, he’s responsible for securing funds and making payments for vehicle fuel and hotels.

D- Performing translation services and also basic mechanical repairs :

  • Serving as a special messenger when required, to deliver cargo, documents/letters or invitations to Mission offices, Local   Government and International Organizations offices.  May be assigned to drive USG official visitors during portions of their trip ;
  • Performing the daily and weekly vehicle maintenance checks, and reports all problems to the garage, through the supervisor. -Ensuring vehicles are delivered for the monthly preventive maintenance check.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements :

Experience :  Prior one (1) year experience as Chauffeur is required.

Job knowledge :  Malian driving  laws, traffic patterns, principal locations around the city, and basic mechanical skills.

Education Requirements :

Completion of elementary school is required.

Evaluations :

 

Language :

  • Level 2 (Limited Knowledge) speaking/reading/writing in French ;
  • Level 2 (Limited Knowledge) speaking/reading/writing in English. “This may be tested”.

 

Skills and abilities :

  • A valid Malian driver’s license, B, C, and D  (truck, SUV and commercial) ;
  • Flexibility and concentration ;
  • Hectic traffic navigation without accident.

Agency Benefits :

Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in BAMAKO/MALI may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.

For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

Hiring preference selection process :  Applicants in the following hiring preference categories are extended a hiring preference in the order listed below.  Therefore, it is essential that these applicants accurately describe their status on the application. * Important :

Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.

** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
