Description

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute is the biggest institution for public health, international health and tropical medicine in Switzerland. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), within the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, develops and applies epidemiological, statistical and mathematical methods to advance innovation, validation, and application in the field of public health.

Within the Infectious Disease Modelling Unit of EPH we are looking for a: Research assistant for data analysis and simulation modelling of malaria (100%)

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team providing evidence to national malaria control programs on the impact of interventions.

 

The tasks will comprise:

  •  collating and extracting relevant information relating to malaria epidemiology and intervention programs in endemic countries,
  •  running simulations using established models of the dynamics of malaria,
  •  providing statistical analyses of model outputs,
  •  improving the simulation workflow to efficiently generate high quality standardized analyses,
  •  communicating with staff of global health organizations and national programs.

We are looking for candidates with:

  1.  Strong statistical and data management skills with a good understanding of statistical/mathematical modelling
  2.  Strong programming skills (preferably in R, but also Python and/or C++)
  3.  MSc or PhD in epidemiology, statistics, mathematics or related discipline
  4.  Expertise/background and interest in areas of infectious disease modelling, epidemiology, public health
  5.  Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and in a culturally diverse environment
  6. Ability to initiate, develop and deliver high quality research and to publish in peer reviewed journals
  7.  Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English, with good presentation skills
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team on large research projects
  9. Ability to initiate, plan, implement and deliver programs of work to tight deadlines

Experience living in a low-income country, working in the field and/or interacting with health authorities is an asset. Applicants with previous expertise in infectious disease modelling and/or with additional geospatial skills are especially encouraged to apply.

The post will be based at the Swiss TPH in Basel but will involve frequent travel. The successful applicant will receive a two year contract.
