1. Background and Context
UNICEF Madagascar office is seeking the services of committed professionals and expert writers/editors/Translators to be engaged as consultant to form a roster of qualified consultants for translating, editing and writing.

How can you make a difference?

2. Purpose and Objective
UNICEF Madagascar office produces a range of key documents, including research publications, communication materials on key children’s issues, programme reports, advocacy briefs, donor reports, policy guidelines, case studies etc. The publications and documents need to be of a high quality in terms of content, style and language (English and French).
The overall objective of this consultancy is to establish a standby arrangement with at least two English and two French writers/editors to be available at short notice to assist with the writing and copy editing of documents in English or French. The focus is on improving overall structure, clarity and style to conform with the UNICEF Style Book.
The contract will specifically include the following services:
  • Translating official documents and publications from French to English or vice-versa
  • Copy editing and copy writing of technical documents
  • Writing of documents based on reports, studies and notes provided by UNICEF
  • Proof-reading, writing and editing of original copy and content on UNICEF-related activities and programmes, such as:
  • Reports and publications, e.g. annual corporate reports, brochures, meeting reports etc.
  • Key messages and briefs on programme issues.
3. Activities, Tasks, Outputs and Deliverables
Description of assignment: Translating, Editing, developing, formatting, proofreading and finalisation of documents for review and final clearance by the supervisor of the consultancy. This includes compliance with the UNICEF style and branding guidelines, grammatical accuracy, factual accuracy and coherence.
The deliverables for each assignment and scope will be discussed, clarified and agreed in writing before the onset of each assignment.
4. Management, Organization and Timeframe

Duration (including potential extension): This consultancy is expected to be for a duration of 11.5 months starting from September 2018 to August 2019. A 2 months trial period will be given.

Supervisor: The Consultant will be supervised by the Chief Communications (a.i.) in coordination with the Research Coordinator (PSE section).

5. Payment schedule
The consultant will be paid upon satisfactory submission of detailed deliverables for each assignment.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education

  • University degree in communication studies, journalism, social sciences or a related arts and humanities field.
  • Proven experiences in translation.
  • Additional training in proofreading and editorial writing an asset.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of proven experience (both at national and international levels) in translating, writing and editing reports and other communication materials in English or French.
  •  Good interpersonal skills, including initiative, flexibility and patience.
  • Organizational and coordination skills.
  •  Computer proficiency including Internet and Microsoft office.
  • Ability to work independently and to deliver high-quality products on time to tight deadlines.
  • Fluency in French and in English both oral and written.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the international development environment and related reporting styles and requirements.
  • Significant experience in translating, writing, editing and proof-reading original content for a wide range of formats and media.
  • Experience and expertise in creative layout and document formatting.
  •  Significant experience with social and development issues relevant to UNICEF’s work.
6.  Technical and Financial proposals
Consultants interested in the above assignment should submit two samples of previous work demonstrating the editing and writing ability.
Please indicate your proposed professional fee at daily rate in US Dollars.
7. Conditions of Work

Location: Antananarivo

As per UNICEF policy, payment will be made against approved deliverables. The consultants selected will be governed by and subject to UNICEF’s General Terms and Conditions for institutional contracts.

8.  UNICEF recourse in case of unsatisfactory performance:
Payment will only be made for work satisfactorily completed and accepted by UNICEF.
