This position supports the Director, in setting and pursuing strategies to positively influence markets bringing change for children, lead commercial strategies and engagement with vaccines industry, as well as medicine, health technologies and other key industries that provide supplies to UNICEF programmes.  Overall, the incumbent will be responsible to lead the Division’s relationship with key partnerships on programme supplies, including GAVI, Global Fund and UNITAID. The position acts as Deputy Director to the Director, Supply Division.

 

How can you make a difference?

The incumbent’s key end results and accountabilities will include:

  1. Oversees the strategic work of Vaccine, Health Technologies, Medicines & Nutrition and WASH-Education teams as well as the Procurement Services team ;
  2. Lead in setting and pursuing strategies to positively influence markets and product innovation that brings change for children; lead commercial strategies and engagement with vaccines industry, as well as medicine, health technologies, sanitation and other key industries that provide supplies to UNICEF and partner programmes ;
  3. Engage in complex strategic commercial matters with strategic suppliers. Provides strategic guidance and leadership to the teams related to markets and its impact for children ;
  4. Lead and coordinates Supply Division strategic relationship with partners including global alliances and initiatives, such as Gavi, GFATM, UNITAID, BMGF, WB, Access to Medicines, Roll Back Malaria, among others ;
  5. Coordinates with Programme Division, PPD, PFP, Legal and other HQ divisions as well as regional and country offices to ensure effective integration of supply strategies and processes, product innovation and roll out of technical guidance ;
  6. Establishes supply priorities in terms of products and services, ensuring Supply Division is fully in line with UNICEF global programme priorities in support of SP and SDG. Keeps abreast of significant organizational issues such as emergencies, as well as market dynamics which could lead to development of programme guidance in support of supply strategy implementation ;
  7. Monitors progress, effectiveness and relevance of strategies with programmes with a view to improving access to essential commodities for children while ensuring performance and achievement of value for money and healthy markets (global and local) ;
  8. Assists the Director in overall management and strategy implementation of the Supply Division and acts as Officer-in-Charge of Supply Division.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Qualifications :

  1. An Advanced University degree, preferably in Public Health, Pharmacy, Business or a related field ;
  2. A minimum of thirteen to fifteen years of progressively responsible managerial experience with international, governmental or commercial organizations, with significant focus on markets and operations ;
  3. Strong analytical skills; ability to use data and analysis to set strategies ;
  4. Networked approach to drive results, including with internal and external stakeholders ;
  5. Ability to manage senior teams and work in a multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships ;
  6. Oral and written proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.

   

Preferred technical expertise of Successful Candidate :

  1. Experience in implementing strategies to positively influence markets. Including commercial negotiations ;
  2. Knowledge of vaccines, medicines, health technologies or nutrition products and their markets ;
  3. Understanding of immunizations, health, sanitation, education programmes in low- and middle- income countries, including supply and demand generation pathways ;
  4. Understanding of quality issues and regulatory pathways for health products.

This position is classified as “rotational” which means the incumbent is expected to rotate to another duty station upon completion of their tour of duty.
