Purpose of the job :

The Research Associate reports to the Research Manager (Level 4) for guidance and general supervision. The research associate works with local research team(s) to collect and compile data and analyse quantitative data.

The aim of the social sciences- formative research team is to work closely with existing programmes and the Ebola response through the commissions to conduct research which will result in clearly identified opportunities for improving quality and accountability of the Ebola response.

The UNICEF social sciences research team works together with the UNICEF programme teams to provide concrete recommendations for programme adaptation based in research results. The team also works together with an integrated Analysis Cell: Social Sciences (under the Ministry of Health and together with WHO, CDC, ICRC other NGO partners). The team use epidemiological data, context analysis, programme implementations among other aspects to both inform research agenda; while equally providing commissions and the Analysis Cell with social sciences analysis to influence the overall response approach.

The mobile (flying) Social Sciences team includes a focus on quantitative data collection which can provide rapid information on knowledge, perceptions and practices which could improve understanding of communities, specific sub-groups or areas to better inform the response.

 

Key Functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks :

  1. Rapid social sciences research: deploy to new and existing locations to conduct quantitative / mixed-methods surveys ;
  2. Develop questionnaires and coding mechanisms for data analysis ;
  3. Identify or train local data collectors to use either digital or paper data collection tools ;
  4. Ensure quality of surveys through review of questionnaires (testing) and control of data collection through preliminary analysis ;
  5. Actively participate in social sciences meetings when and as necessary ;
  6. Ensure knowledge management and data sharing ;
  7. Other support as requested.

 

Main Tasks :

Rapid social sciences research: deploy to new and existing locations to conduct quantitative/ mixed methods surveys  

  • Deploy to different locations (including remote areas) and setup quantitative data survey ;
  • Follow SOPs for Social Sciences research (sign-off and validation procedures under MoH) ;
  • Organize and set up all required procedures in a quick and efficient manner  ;
  • Identify and contribute to content of questionnaires – based on understanding of context and discussions with field teams ;
  • When requested/ needed, set up data analysis and validation sessions.

Develop questionnaires and coding mechanisms for data analysis :

  • ensure all questionnaires have been put into excel tables for use on magpi (data collection tool) ;
  • ensure coding has been cleared and tested using tablet and online data analysis (marketsight) ;
  • ensure that coding has been developed in a clear and easy to analyse format ;
  • share coding and questionnaires online and with data analysts (CDC).

Identify or train local data collectors to use either digital or paper data collection tools :

  • At field locations, identify local data collection teams ;
  • Hire local teams and provide on location trainings ;
  • Identify best and strongest team members, keeping a database of trained data collectors with evaluation.

Ensure quality of surveys through review of questionnaires (testing0 and control data collection through preliminary analysis

  • All survey questions should be reviewed and tested, ensuring details for all questions and how to be answered and analysed are clear ;
  • Accompany field teams to check on quality control during data collection.

 Actively participate in social sciences meetings when and as necessary :

  • Present CAP results when/ if requested ;
  • Be present in all CASS team and external meetings (based on requests) with information on all CAPs (analysed data, questionnaires etc).

Ensure knowledge management and data sharing :

  • All questionnaires should be saved and labelled PER location with matching data tools (exel and magpi) and analysed data ;
  • Contribute to existing Social Sciences online drive.

Other support as requested :

  • Participate in meetings ;
  • Present CAP results in various for a ;
  • Be aware of all existing presentations and results to be able to share with response ;
  • Develop short presentations ;
  • Analyse additional data ;
  • collect and participate in qualitative data collection.

Impact of Results :

The Social Sciences team contributes to an improved informed UNICEF response based on context and community knowledge and understanding, as well as strong research and understanding in short and long term potential impacts of the Ebola response. The social sciences team will contribute to UNICEF’s accountability to affected populations and appropriateness and quality of the overall response. Furthermore, this team co-leads the CASS and contributes to a greater understanding of community, context and social behavioural factors to improve the appropriateness of the Ebola response.

Recruitment Qualifications :

Education :

  • A Master’ degree with Social Science Research experience is required : public health, epidemiology ;
  • Experience in quantitative surveys ;
  • Additional relevant post-graduate courses that complement/supplement the main degree are a strong asset.

Experience :

  • Humanitarian : At least two years research experience working in humanitarian and development context ( with UN-Govt-INGO) is required ;
  • Experience in public health emergencies is required ;
  • Experience in health research in humanitarian or development programmes is required.

Technical requirements :

  • Quantitative research skills, Strong skills in conducting CAP or similar quantitative surveys using tablets ;
  • Experience in surveys ;
  • Humanitarian programming, Expert knowledge ;
  • Public health emergency response ;
  • Monitoring and evaluation in humanitarian programmes ;
  • Surveys and questionnaires, Strong skills and experience in evaluation surveys ;
  • Knowledge management ;
  • Training and development of training tools ;
  • Report writing.

 

Language Requirements : Fluency in French and Swahili, and good command of English is required.
