The Office of Research-Innocenti is the dedicated research office of UNICEF. It undertakes and commissions research on emerging or current issues of relevance for children in order to inform the strategic directions, policies and programmes of UNICEF and its partners. The Office explores emerging issues, identifies research gaps, brings together existing researchers and supports or undertakes new research and data collection to address critical questions and to inform global debates.

 

How can you make a difference?

Innocenti is looking to build a roster of mid-senior level consultants with experience in data management, data cleaning, data analysis and data visualization, from which to draw candidates for work planned in 2019 and 2020. Consultancy arrangements may range from 6 weeks to 11.5 months, depending on demand, project specifications and funding availability. Consultants who are selected from the roster will work under the supervision of lead researchers at the Office of Research.  Consultants may be requested to work onsite in Florence, or remotely as determined by the specification of the project. The work may include incidental travel to participate in field work, workshops or conferences; such travel will be governed by UNICEF travel policies for consultants.

Selected candidates may be recruited as consultants to support research and data-related activities in the office across a range of areas, including :
  • Health, including mental health and sexual and reproductive health ;
  • Child and adolescent well-being, including subjective well-being ;
  • Migration and displacement ;
  • Digital technology ;
  • Gender ;
  • Violence ;
  • Child marriage ;
  • Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) ;
  • Food security and nutrition ;
  • Education ;
  • Social protection ;
  • Paid and unpaid work, including unpaid care and domestic work, and child labor ;
  • Time use ;
  • Adolescent participation ;
  • Environment and climate change ;
  • Consultants will work under the technical guidance and supervision of staff at Innocenti and in collaboration with different research teams. Examples of assignments and tasks can include one or more of the following ;
  • Performing data mapping exercises ;
  • Designing new datasets ;
  • Synthesizing existing data sources ;
  • Data cleaning ;
  • Analysis of primary and secondary data sources (qualitative or quantitative) ;
  • Data visualization ;
  • Writing short briefs and reports based on data analysis ;
  • Where necessary, consultants will travel to UNICEF HQ, Regional or Country Office locations to present findings and/or provide technical assistance in research design, analysis and field work.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Candidates should have experience in fields relevant to the Office of Research-Innocenti, expertise in quantitative or qualitative methods, excellent data analysis using relevant statistical and qualitative analysis software and writing skills, be responsive and able to work within a dynamic team :

  • Master degree or PhD in developmental studies, gender studies, public health, nutrition, economics, public policy, social sciences, education, demography, statistics, or related field ;
  • Between three and seven years of relevant work experience in university, research organization, consulting firm, or related ;
  • Excellent quantitative/statistical and analytical skills, including ability to carry out statistical analyses autonomously; or qualitative data analytical skills. Applicants must clearly specify in the application if they have quantitative or qualitative skills (or both when applicable) ;
  • Demonstrated experience at analyzing household and/or other survey data or qualitative data, preferably with a focus on children. Experience with big data will be an asset ;
  • Substantive knowledge in one or more of the following of the areas listed above ;
  • Excellent knowledge of Stata, SPSS and other statistical packages and/or qualitative software such as MAXQDA, NVivo or similar. Applicants must clearly specify in the application which software or package they excel at ;
  • Ability to organize own work and to carry out a research project with limited supervision according to deadlines ;
  • Ability to speak and write fluently in English; good working knowledge of French, Arabic or Spanish an asset ;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization ;
  • Commitment to UNICEF principles and mandate ;
  • Experience with field work and data collection, including with vulnerable groups is desirable.

 

Duration of roster-based consultancies :

Consultants who are selected from the roster will work on specific deliverables and with timeframes as determined by the office based on project needs. The consultant will be issued a contract which is subject to UNICEF General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants / Individual Contractors. The length of the contract will depend on project needs and funding availability. The Roster will remain valid for 24 months.
