Activity Overview :

Support for Polio Eradication and Vaccine Preventable Disease Activities in Sub-Saharan Africa-AFRO Team Activity will further the Global Immunization Division’s mission and activities in informing the Ministries of Health on polio eradication strategies, VPD surveillance, polio campaign improvements, routine immunization implementation, best practices for data management, poliovirus containment and legacy activities.

Roles and Responsibilities :

URC is currently seeking an Epidemiologist – Level 1 who will support polio eradication and vaccine preventable disease activities.  Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :
  • Assist Ministries of Health (MOH), international organizations, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals (IVB), and other public health organizations with epidemiologic data analysis and to identify solutions to problems that arise in polio eradication and Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) program implementation and outbreak response ;
  • Assist MOH and other partners with planning and implementing activities to improve data management practices for vaccine preventable disease surveillance ;
  • Assist MOHs and other partners in improving surveillance for disease prevented by existing and new vaccines ;
  • Supporting immunization activities, both routine and supplemental activities as well as acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and polio case investigations ;
  • Assisting in the development of technical and financial reports ;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of training and communication materials for partners to help improve the quality of their incoming data ;
  • Collaborating with the IVB and Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) ;
  • Provide technical advice to the GPEI ;
  • Coordinating CDC responses and inputs and advising CDC regarding technical contributions to the Eradication and Outbreak Management Group (EMOG) at the United Nations in New York, NY.

Minimum Qualifications :

Required Experience & Qualifications  :
  • MPH, preferably in Epidemiology ;
  • International experience in leading polio eradication activities particularly in outbreak response in complex settings ;
  • At least 5 years of experience in vaccine practices and community-based surveillance activities ;
  • At least 5 years of experience in facilitation of training diverse and large groups in the MOH and community on surveillance, immunization and introduction of new vaccine ;
  • Bi-lingual in French and English.
