Context :

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Butembo, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As Area Manager, you will manage and implement several projects based on the specified directives in terms of speed, content, schedule and budget. The main activities of the projects cover food security, agricultural support, infrastructure, WASH activities and capacity building of local partners in the Beni Territory. Working at the interface between development activities and humanitarian response, you will be expected to actively contribute to the overall governance of the country office and to the delivery of its strategic and annual operational plan. The projects are carried out in accordance with Welthungerhilfe standards and the directives and contractual agreements with the donors.

Your responsibilities :

  • Carry out the projects according to the rules and standards of the co-financing donor and Welthungerhilfe ;
  • Ensure that all project relevant support is in place (monitoring, logistics, finance administration, etc.) ;
  • Take responsibility for the modification and continuation of project planning and project budget ;
  • Coordinate MEAL activities and organise the systematic collection, processing and analysis of data/information according to project documentation and agreed results ;
  • Report to the Country Director and the Head of Programmes on the progress of the project(s) and all risks associated with the projects’ work ;
  • Manage staff according to Welthungerhilfes’ principles, staff policies and strategy ;
  • Take responsibility for the implementation and monitoring of the security management system of Welthungerhilfe in the project areas ;
  • Maintain ongoing surveillance of the developing humanitarian emergency situation and adjust activities accordingly ;
  • Represent WHH vis-à-vis all relevant national and international stakeholders and partners in the area.

Your profile :

  • A university or polytechnic degree in a relevant field like international studies, natural resource management, agricultural development or civil society strengthening ;
  • At least 5 years professional experience working in the global south, including Sub-Saharan Africa or South East Asia ;
  • Excellent diplomatic and communication skills and the ability to engage a range of stakeholders from local farming groups to local authorities and national government ministers ;
  • Strong planning and coordination skills ;
  • Broad intercultural competence ;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deliver results in a challenging context ;
  • A high level of mental and physical resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions ;
  • Excellent spoken and written English and French, German language skills would be an asset.
