United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP’s) is the leading humanitarian organization, and the core mandate and strengths centres around three priorities: saving lives in emergency situations; improving the nutrition and quality of life of the most vulnerable people; and helping to build assets and promote the self-reliance of poor people and communities. Within the context of an increased donor interest in local purchase, as well as an increased demand to cater for more complex response to the needs of beneficiaries with diverse food baskets, food safety and quality has been identified as a major priority for WFP. This is to make sure that all food commodities procured by WFP are safe, nutritious and have a good shelf life.

WFP’s food safety and quality system is currently based on product technical specifications, factory inspections, end-product testing, and inspection during processing and packaging, and visual checks of the food during storage. Thus, in order to meet some of the operation requirements and In line with national government priorities and donor interest. The United Nations World Food Programme Regional Bureau for Southern Africa (RBJ), based in Johannesburg, South Africa, is looking to fill an internship position in the Supply Chain Unit to temporarily support the National Food Technologist in the effective implementation of the Food Safety and Quality Management System (FSQMS across all operations in 12 countries of the region. The Internship will be for an initial period of six months with possible extension and starting as soon as possible.

 

Key Accountabilities(not all-inclusive) :

The Food Safety and Quality intern will report directly to the Regional Food Technologist under close supervision of Regional Head of Supply chain Unit. The incumbent shall also work in close collaboration with other internal stakeholders such as Supply chain Unit, Nutrition Unit, Headquarters (Food Quality and Safety unit) and Country Offices where RBJ operates. The incumbent will predominantly be responsible for a variety of assignments including but not limited to the followings :

  • Assist the Regional Food Technologist with the Food Safety and Quality (FSQ) data management: support gathering, recording information and related analysis ;
  • Assist the Regional Food Technologist in re-organizing and updating information on the food suppliers’ audits (CAPA, list of audited factories, etc.) ;
  • Assist the Regional Food Technologist in the status of implementation of Food Safety and Quality Management System (FSQMS) in the respective countries were RBJ operates ;
  • Assist the Regional Food Technologist in developing and piloting vendor performance tracking system ;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications & experience required :

Education:

University degree in Food Technology, Food Science or any other relevant university degrees. Currently enrolled at a university or graduate school, have attended courses 12 months and have completed at least two years’ undergraduate studies. Alternatively have completed a university qualification in the last 12 months.

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment ;
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
