A highlight of DATA4CHANGE is a residential workshop for five days with a full immersion into the inner workings of a data visualization studio. The organizations of civil society and non-governmental organizations involved in one of the social and the most pressing political problems in the world are associated with carefully selected team of industry experts, covering the disciplines of data analysis, journalism, graphic design and web development.

Since 2014, over 200 people from over 40 countries attended the highlights of DATA4CHANGE in London, Beirut and Kampala. We are pleased to announce that applications are now open to attend our 2019 event, to be held in Nairobi Garage . Data4Change is very pleased to have the Code for Africa on board as a partner of the event.

For 2019, we do things a little differently and open the call for applications for our civil society organizations (CSOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) first. Therefore, if you want to register as a creative, come back to us at the beginning of 2019 or keep an eye on our social media streams to be the first to know when the next round of applications will begin.

It is also the first time that we host a thematic theme DATA4CHANGE. All projects this year will focus on the digital rights of internet freedom and / or freedom of expression online . DATA4CHANGE is a proud member and implementation partner UPROAR a coalition of organizations seeking to raise awareness of digital rights in 21 countries. DATA4CHANGE Nairobi in 2019 supports the work of UPROAR.

If you work for an organization of civil society or NGO that deals with any of these issues in at least one of the countries listed below, you are eligible to apply. Your job may also cover other countries, but must include at least one of the target countries.

East africa : Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda

South Africa : Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe

West Africa : Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone

Middle east and central asia : Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Sudan

At the end of each event The team has a proof of concept or a fully rendered for an advocacy campaign data driven prototype and wealth of immeasurable experience that is to spend five days with a group of people with diverse and varied talents. You will use the data to tell stories and change hearts and minds, and keep lasting memories and friendships that change lives.

The proposed thematic areas include, without limitation, the following :

  • Censorship, closures, barriers to free access ;
  • Innovation, free software and open source ;
  • privacy, surveillance, encryption ;
  • Legislation and policy on the Internet, freedom of the press, privacy, access ;
  • Governance of the Internet, net neutrality ;
  • Protection and realization of human rights online.

Applications :

attend DATA4CHANGE are reviewed by a board of advisors and the competition is very difficult. If you are accepted, you and a colleague will receive a full scholarship to attend the event.

Application Calendar

Phase One: Open call.

Apply :

early and beat the crowd! During this phase, we accept applications from interested civil society organizations. On an ongoing basis, we contact each applicant to begin the process of creating our preset, so the more you apply, the sooner we can assess your eligibility. Once you have applied, our team start to consider your application. If we decide to advance your request to phase Secondly, we will be in touch to arrange a time to interview you.

Second phase: interviews :

In the video interview, we will discuss the theme you offer and will ask you questions about your previous work. We would like to ask you about the priorities of your organization and find out how the topic you choose proposed fits with them. We will also take the time to describe itemize what you can expect from a flagship event DATA4CHANGE and answer all your questions. We like to know that your colleagues support the proposal and will rally around the results so we can ask you to identify key decision makers throughout your organization can join us for the interview also.

Phase Three : Data Diving.

If your organization is one of the lucky four selected to participate, you have a practical support for Africa DATA4CHANGE and code to help you prepare your equipment for the event. We will work with you to identify data sources, clean all the data sets that you already have and get them ready for the event and prepare information materials for your team. This so you have the best chance of success in the event.
