Organ :

The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector of the Union (the Union has three functional sectors: Standardization, Radiocommunication and Development) which deals mainly with development policies, strategies, programming, as well as technical cooperation activities (expert missions, training programmes, field projects, seminars, etc.).

Organization Unit :

Within the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the ITU and in close collaboration with the Deputy to the Director and the ITU Regional Offices, the Infrastructure, Enabling Environment and E-Applications Department (IEE) is committed to assisting ITU Member States and ITU-D Sector Members in advancing the development of telecommunication/ICT infrastructure and services as well as fostering an enabling policy and regulatory market environment for investment and growth in an inclusive digital economy. This includes the provision of tools, guidelines and strategies for decision-makers on collaborative regulatory mechanisms across the sectors, policy and market regulation, cybersecurity, conformity and interoperability, spectrum management, broadcasting, broadband and IPv6 implementation. It also includes building confidence and security in the use of ICTs as well as the development of national-scale ICT applications and programs for socio-economic development in the areas of e-Health, e-Agriculture and e-Education amongst others, ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities and digital skills development for women and youth. IEE actively contributes to the work of ITU-D Study Groups and various ITU-led events.

 

Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the Internship :

  • Research policy and technical issues related to the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in relation to global challenges, identifying key issues to be followed up by ITU. Based on the profile of the candidate issues to be included could cover issues such as cybersecurity, sustainability, digital inclusion or internet public policy issues, among others ;
  • Follow up discussions at the UN level in the areas covered by the research, supporting ITU participation at selected ITU and UN events linked to the areas covered in the research, for a, such as the cybersecurity and SDGs, among others ;
  • Produce briefings, content and background reports supporting the development of ITU strategy and position on the issues covered in the research. The content produced may be featured in ITU official documents, communication channels, as well as in future ITU publications ;
  • Support data gathering on ICT networks, services and applications, as well as on the use of ICTs, organizing, processing and analyzing for ITU databases and websites ;
  • Support the organization of ITU events related to the issues covered in the research, engaging with external partners to coordinate content, speakers, follow up actions and logistics before, during and after each event ;
  • Support ITU delegation participating in meetings, workshops and conferences organized by external organizations. This activity includes liaising with external counterparts and supporting ITU delegation during meetings.

Skills :

  • Advanced knowledge of English for editing document and experience in conducting research and preparing publications will be valued ;
  • Examples of texts and written assignment, will be requested during the selection process and advance use of ICT tools and interest for the Cybersecurity element will be valued.

Qualifications required :

Education :

  • University degree in areas related to information and communication technologies including cybersecurity, as well as economy, international relations or international legislation studies. Other University degrees will be considered based on the areas of the research ;
  • ITU Internships are preferably opened to undergraduate and/or graduate University students.

Experience :

No working experience is required.

Languages :

Good knowledge of English and excellent knowledge of one of the UN languaages (in particular Spanish) for conducting research and producing documents.

Additional Information :

Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same conditions of employment as a Short term or a Fixed term position. Mandatory Medical Insurance, travel expenses, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or sponsoring institutions.
