More than 500 million children – nearly a quarter of the world’s children – are estimated to live in countries affected by fragility, conflict and disaster. To help realize the rights of every child, UNICEF needs to be able to deal effectively with these challenges. The Humanitarian Action and Transition Section (HATIS) in the UNICEF Programme Division is tasked to increase knowledge and capacity on all issues related to resilient development, risk-informed programming, fragility, conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding across the organization. This includes technical support to UNICEF Regional Offices and Country Offices, the development of technical guidance, evidence generation and the exchange of programming experience and good practice. For this purpose, a set of key knowledge management (KM) priorities has been identified, including the expansion of staff access to knowledge both within and outside of the organization, facilitated by the adoption of an efficient content management system and tools for all staff globally who work on risk, resilience, fragility and peacebuilding.

A growing Community of Practice provides peer support for UNICEF staff working on issues of risk, resilience and peacebuilding. This community comprises of programme, planning and emergency staff across diverse countries and regions. There is currently a demand to establish a new online platform for the community to keep up with new demands for knowledge sharing and collaboration from the field. In addition, HATIS is tasked to undertake the scanning, synthesis and packaging of existing knowledge products that are not yet available on the Community Site. The intern will work with the HATIS team and with a dedicated knowledge management and ICT consultant to strengthen the global Community of Practice.

 

How can you make a difference?

• Support the HATIS team in the development of a new online platform for the global community of practice on risk, resilience and peacebuilding ;
• Assist with the organization and presentation of existing knowledge products, organized through thematic web pages, document libraries and databases/lists ;
• Support various knowledge exchange format, which allow field staff to collaborate on joint projects and participate in discussions ;
• Collect, scan and synthesize existing programme documents relating risk, resilience, fragility, humanitarian and development nexus and peacebuilding; and make them available for dissemination through the Community Site ;
• Support the development of additional tools for knowledge exchange (e.g. newsletter, discussion forum or mailing lists).

Benefits to Intern :

This internship will provide an opportunity to learn firsthand about UNICEF’s work in contexts affected by conflict and disasters with exposure to the organization’s work at HQ level and in the field. The intern will also learn about knowledge management, knowledge exchange, as well as evidence-based programming approaches.

Location : UNICEF New York HQ.

Duration : This will be a part time or full-time internship for a period of 3 to 6 months

 

Salary/Payment :

In accordance with the internal standard operating procedure, interns are paid a stipend of US $1,500 per month for full-time work, subject to availability of funds. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

Insurance :

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.

 

Living Conditions and Working Environment :

The intern will work at UNICEF House, New York.  S/he will work with the Humanitarian Action and Transition section and report to the supervisor of this internship.  S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in Section’s meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• Be enrolled in Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) or undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in the area of International Relation, Development Studies, or a related field with excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records ;
• Strong experience with Microsoft Office365 Suite. Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint is desirable ;
• Excellent communications skills, especially written communications, facilitation skills, and ability to interact in an international and culturally diverse environment ;
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks ;
• Knowledge of online publishing and communication, including social media and outreach tools ;
• Experience in knowledge management projects (i.e., intranet, communities of practice, content management, etc.)  desirable ;
• Knowledge of international development in the context risk- and crisis prone contexts is desirable ;
• Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required, knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

In order to be considered, an Intern MUST attach the following documents with their application :

• Letter of verification from the college or university that the intern is currently enrolled in an undergraduate school and has completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an undergraduate degree (if the candidate is 18 years old, this replaces the two-year bachelor’s completion requirement); or, Graduate Degree Program (i.e., Master’s, PhD). It should also state the expected graduation date.  Recent graduates are allowed until 2 years after degree completion ;
• Copy of their most recent official transcript showing excellent academic performance ;
• Copy of Identification Card (ID) ;
• One letter of signed recommendation on letterhead or from professional email address.
