UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, a Champion

In Burundi, a land-locked country marked by low human development, high levels of poverty, chronic malnutrition and many other challenges to the survival, development and full rights realization of children and women, the dynamic medium-sized UNICEF Country Office supports the Government in achieving results for children.

The country has the highest rate of chronic malnutrition (stunting) in the world at 56% among under-five children (DHS 2017). 78% of Burundian children who represent 55% of the population suffer from multiple deprivations (UNICEF, 2017) with deprivations especially high in the north-eastern, mostly rural part of the country.

Since the 2000 Arusha Peace agreement until the 2015 socio-political crisis, Burundi has made remarkable achievements in consolidating peace and security. Also, on the socio-economic front, the Government has made significant progress in establishing a relatively stable macroeconomic environment, the rebuilding of core public sector institutions, which in turn have contributed to improved sector outcomes (especially in basic health and primary education). Despite these efforts Burundi is still one of the poorest countries in the world with 8 out of 10 people living on less than 1.25 USD a day. While the situation for children is particularly precarious and they are more prone to poverty and vulnerability the 2015 socio-political crisis placed further strain on existing coping mechanisms and increased vulnerabilities and needs for resilience support.

In this context, UNICEF Burundi is aiming to enhance its capacity to communicate results and data with different stakeholders internal and external with improved documentation, visualization of results and data.
