Ending AIDS by 2030 is a global commitment under the SDGs, articulated under the overarching health goal of SDG 3 and linked to several other goals 1-5, 8, 10, 11, 16 and 17. ‘Ending AIDS by 2030’, will only be possible if the world ‘Ends Adolescent AIDS’. To do this, UNICEF is supporting countries to scale up effective interventions to reach the adolescents and young people in the 10-24 age group, at higher risk of HIV. A key area of UNICEF support is the development and use of novel analytics for prioritizing geographies and locating adolescents at higher risk of HIV. This includes (but not restricted to) integrative approaches using traditional and novel methodologies, data sources (including big data sources), tools including applying geo-spatial techniques and network science principles to field-level programming.


How can you make a difference?

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary to contribute to :

  • Investigating new and emerging/cutting edge methodologies, data sources and tools to determine risk to HIV among 10-24-year age group ;
  • Developing a robust, practical approach for prioritizing geographies and locating population segments at risk ;
  • Piloting the framework and documenting the outcomes.


Benefits to the Intern :

This internship will complement the formal academic training and field experience, by providing further exposure to cutting edge inter-disciplinary work, as applied to field settings. The intern will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that brings together specialists working on data and analytics, programmes, research and innovations.

The internship will provide an opportunity to expand existing technical and/or scientific writing skills, gain hands-on experience organizing high-level consultations, and apply newly acquired technical and research Particularly driven candidates will have opportunities to publish in the peer-reviewed literature. The internship will also give an opportunity to understand UNICEF architecture and operations of UNICEF and the larger UN, and how international cooperation achieves its objectives in the development sector.

 

Insurance :

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with the Section.

If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Living Conditions and Working Environment :

The intern will work at UNICEF 633 building, New York.  S/he will work with the PD and Human of Human Resources and report to the supervisor of this internship. S/he is not expected to travel out of this duty station during the assignment. A flexible workspace will be provided. The intern will be expected to participate in section meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the intern, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) program in public health, epidemiology, social sciences, global studies or related fields with a strong quantitative focus; or computational, information or network science with a strong focus on interdisciplinary research with application to human health/ health sciences ;
  • Have robust data analysis skills using Excel, SAS, STATA, SPSS ;
  • Have familiarity with big data/ business analytics tools/ software like Tableau ;
  • Have strong writing skills for drafting reports, briefs, white papers ;
  • Have fluency in English. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
