For every child, better health and nutrition :

UNICEF Mozambique is interested on building capacity of motivated professionals interested to work in public health and is recruiting a candidate to learn and support interventions in child health and nutrition at district level.

The candidate will be based in Quelimane office, focusing on child health and nutrition interventions, for a period of 6 months. UNICEF has 14 program staffs based in Maputo office who implement child health and nutrition programs supporting the Ministry of Health of Mozambique in all provinces and few non-government organization. However, due to the extent of the country and the need to closely follow-up on the district and community level interventions it has sub-offices in Quelimane and Nampula where 1 to 2 program staffs are currently deployed. The candidate will be integrated in this dynamic team supervised by Health Specialist, based in Maputo office and supported by Health officer, based in Quelimane office.

Quelimane city and Zambezia province is a safe duty station offering a variety of different accommodation options.  It provides an excellent opportunity to work in a context of a low in-coming countries where challenges of human resources for health, inadequate financing, and supply chain affects services delivery.

 

How can you make a difference?

The Intern health and nutrition volunteer will work in the health and nutrition component, supported by a supervisor. He/she will receive an inception debriefing in Maputo covering: a) UNICEF’s portfolio in community health workers which intends to reduce maternal and child health mortality including interventions to strengthen quality of care provided at community level and integrated nutrition package; b) intervention to strengthen quality maternal and child health in rural health facilities. The candidate work will include engagement with external partners including government partners and non-government organizations.

More specifically the candidate will be responsible for the following tasks :

  • Improving the quality of community health workers program in Zambezia province ;
  • In collaboration with health officer support the review and update of population targets of community health workers of Zambezia informed by community mapping database ;
  • In collaboration with health officer perform monthly iCCM and nutrition data analysis in Zambezia province with focus on malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, newborn health, infant and young child feeding and identify implementation challenges and intervention opportunities ;
  • Participate in quarterly joint supervision visits of iCCM activities and integrated nutrition package (PIN) to ensure quality and document human interesting stories ;
  • Support provincial health authorities to assess implementation strengths of m-health program – upscale ;
  • Support the strengthening and follow-up of referral loops for sick children ;
  • Participate in PIN training ;
  • Supporting the supervision of clinical mentorship of maternal and child health nurses ;
  • Preparing monthly report on the work done ;
  • Carry out other related tasks requested by UNICEF such as training of staff on supervision guidelines, review of training and supervision plans and development of emergency preparedness and response plans.

 

Results/Expected Output :

  • The quality of intervention on iCCM, integrated package of nutrition (PIN) and mentorship of maternal and child health nurses is improved and documented ;
  • Opportunities to improve mentorship program of maternal and child health nurses are identified ;
  • Human interesting stories on iCCM and nutrition are documented.

 

Learning expectations :

Learning and development are a central part of this assignment. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the assignment include the development of functional competencies :

  • Learning and researching:  Will be exposed to new tasks which will have to demonstrate understanding in a short period and gather information to support decision making ;
  • Planning and organizing: will set objectives plan activities, organize resources needed to accomplish the tasks, manage time effectively and monitor performance against deadlines and milestones ;
  • Adapting and responding o changes: will be able to adapt to changing circumstances and other crises, accept new ideas and change initiatives, adapt interpersonal style to suite different people and situation ;
  • Deciding and initiation actions: will be allowed to take responsibility for actions, take initiative and work under own direction, generate and initiate activities and introduce changes into work process.

Beyond be exposed to functional competencies the candidate will be encouraged to :

  • Learn on Mozambique health care system ;
  • Be acquainted with UNICEF priority actions in Mozambique.

 

Modality :

The assignment will be fully funded by The Mercator Fellowship who will directly pay the costs for this assignment. The Mercator Fellowship is one of UNICEF partner organization. You can learn more about the program here : here.

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will…

  • Degree in public health or Medicine or social sciences ;
  • Demonstrated adequate level of competences in communication, working with people and drive for results ;
  • Demonstrated values of diversity and inclusion, integrity and commitment ;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction and supervision ;
  • Experience of MS OFFICE applications ;
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset ;
  • Ability to communicate in Portuguese is required. Fluency or knowledge of another official UN language (English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
